Phuket Governor Participates in the Launch of Phuket Peranakan Festival 2023

On May 18, 2566, at 17:30, at the Charter Bank House in Phuket, Mr. Rewat Arirob, the Governor of Phuket, participated in the press conference to launch the Phuket Peranakan Festival 2023. The festival aims to promote cultural tourism and generate economic revenue for Phuket province, known as the Festival Economy 2023, welcoming tourists from around the world. The event will feature more than 20 impressive processions and contemporary art shows by the “Baba Yaya” group from June 23rd to 25th, 2566, in Phuket Old Town. Mr. Naron Wunsiew, the Governor of Phuket, chaired the press conference, accompanied by Mr. Hat Kattanchalikul, the President of the Phuket Provincial Administration Organization, along with members of the Phuket Provincial Council, government officials, and staff of the Phuket Provincial Administration Organization.

Phuket Province, the Phuket Provincial Administration Organization, the Office of Convention and Exhibition Management (Private Organization), also known as CPEO, the Phuket City Municipality, the Peranakan Association of Phuket, and the Thai International Trade Promotion Association, organized the Phuket Peranakan Festival 2023 to showcase the sustainable nature of the old town community and elevate the local cultural festival to a continuous tradition. This aims to benefit the conservation of local heritage and create opportunities for local businesses by leveraging the expertise of the local community and promoting tourism linked to Phuket’s cultural values and local identity. This will contribute to the development and enhancement of community-based sustainable tourism by utilizing the original City DNA and the enduring heritage and culture of the Peranakan community to create a festival that resonates globally. This will promote festival-based tourism in the area through coordinated promotional efforts among various agencies. It will help revive tourism in Phuket by generating interest, creating new spaces, generating employment, and increasing income for the local community and landowners. This is a part of the government’s plan to promote the Festival Economy, one of the seven main strategies aimed at creating economic value for the city and revitalizing the economy of Phuket by elevating the festival to an international level in the future. The Phuket Peranakan Festival will be the starting point for a fully-fledged festival that Phuket residents will have ownership rights to in the near future.

Schedule for the Phuket Peranakan Festival 2023:

Saturday, June 24, 2566, from 17:00 to 18:30: World Phuket PERANAKAN Carnival Historical Parade featuring 20 grand historical processions of the “Baba Yaya” group, showcasing the cultural transition from the original heritage to the contemporary era along a route spanning over 1.2 kilometers around Phuket Old Town.

Friday, June 23, to Sunday, June 25, 2566, from 16:00 to 18:30 each day: Daily street performances and Phuket Old Town Light Shows as part of the World Phuket PERANAKAN Celebration Shows, taking place on Thalang Road and Soi Rommani.
